A domain name is essential to any website as this allows DNS, Dynamic Naming Servers, to find your site. These are typically .com for American sites and .com.au for Australian sites. All countries have their own extensions such as .nz for New Zealand etc.  These are not the only extensions that you can have, some others are .net, .org and .biz just to name a few. To add further confusion into the mix, you can be an Australian company with an Australian website and still have a .com domain name. It really doesn’t matter that much, but personally, I find that if I am looking for Australian websites and I come across a .com website, I would probably overlook it in favor of a .com.au website. Typically, domain registrations are for 2 years but there are variations depending on the domain extension, it may only be for 1 year. Other extensions may be registered up to 4 years.
