What's the difference between wireless broadband and wireless networks?

People often ask me about wireless networks but are confused about the difference between wireless networks and wireless broadband. Both technologies have wireless in their names, so must be similar in nature, right? Wrong. Both technologies use a wireless method to transmit and recieve radio signals, but that is where the similarities end.

Wireless Broadband

Wireless broad band uses the mobile phone, 3g or 4g network to transmit and receive signals to and from the Internet. Connections currently use the 3g or 4g network system. Connection to the Internet is usually in the form of a USB dongle, (transmitter/receiver), plugged into a USB port on the computer. An example of a USB dongle is pictures on the right. Software in the form a connection client is installed on the computer and must be running prior to connection to the Internet. Internet service providers will provide access using either pre paid or post paid accounts. Pre-paid accounts have an amount of money credited to the account and the user will typically either use up the allocated time or data in the account. Once the credit or time has expired, the user will no longer be able to access the Internet except to top up the account. A post paid account means that a user can use as much data as they need, and based on this will receive a bill for the data usage, usually a monthly account.

Wireless broadband is great for people that travel around and need to have access to the Internet anywhere they happen to be. Because wireless broadband utilizes the mobile phone network, you will be able to connect to the Internet everywhere you can get mobile phone reception. This, of course depends on the carrier that you are with. If your carrier is not available in your area and they have no agreement with other carriers, you will not be able to access the Internet.

WirelessRouterWireless Networks

Wireless networks typically consist of an access point that devices with wireless connectivity will be able to connect to. The access point is either built into the Internet modem, or is a separate device that is connected by Ethernet cable. An example of a wireless access point built into an ADSL modem is shown on the right. Wireless connectivity is available only in a radius around the access point. This may be up to 50 meters so it is a good idea to set a security key to prevent unauthorized people from connecting to your wireless network without your permission. Wireless networks allow multiple computers and devices to be connected to the Internet at the same time, all utilizing the one Internet connection. There is no additional cost to connect multiple computers, apart from the additional data the devices use.

4gWirelessDeviceThere is another connection device, just to add a bit more confusion, this is a wireless broadband device that has wireless network built in. This means that the device has a sim card to connect to the mobile phone network but computers do not have to have a connection client installed in order to connect to the Internet, but do need to have wireless connectivity in order to connect to the device. This is a good alternative as it allows multiple computers or devices to connect to the Internet using the one wireless broadband connection. The device shown right, typically plugs into a power adapter to charge an internal battery. When charged the device can be used without connection to power
